Colin Kloecker and Shanai Matteson are community artists in the sense that their medium is the community. Working together as the collective Works Progress, they produce a host of events, projects, and resources that help people in communities engage with one another, build connections, and spark creative and collaborative conversations to draw the disparate members of a community or neighborhood closer together. Their body of work is wide-ranging and innovative. Among their many initiatives are monthly “Give and Take” events in which community members can share the knowledge they have and also actively seek out information they are interested in from their neighbors. The pair have organized “Neighbor Makers” events that offer strangers an opportunity to connect through activities and conversations that include collaborative drawings and role-play. They also built a mobile pop-up art cart that can move to any neighborhood and serve as a center for communication and creativity. Each of these projects is aimed at connecting people where they live and work to build stronger, more vibrant communities.
